A thousand steps
Mark the place
Where workers scaled
This mountain face.
We,
For a view
Their steps retrace
Then past the stairs
Ones they built there
We scramble higher
What seek we?
Yonder vistas rare
We reach a cliff
Then sit and stare
Far, far below
Lie Jack’s Narrows
We glimpse Mapleton
And around a bend
Winds a freight train
Like a long-lost friend
Through the gap there flows
That ribbon of water
There she goes..
The Juniata
The blue ridges
Into the distance
Disappear
A sigh of contentment
A breeze stirs the air
It’s peace up here
The birds in the air
And the trees seem to hear
My thoughts of introspection
And thoughtful reflection.
We scramble back down
Watching for snakes
Being careful of
The rocks that shake.
We soon rejoin
The trail Standing Stone.
And jolt, dance, and leap
Down those steps
From which we began.
So,
In conclusion
Take a friend
Go for a hike
Up mountainside
Or down a stream
Life’s too short
To never dream.
